Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud
It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:
- It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
- If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
- Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.

My husband and I have just come home from a holiday in Rome, in particular
Crispi Penthouse - Via Crispi 64, doorbell 9.
I am partially disabled and asked for a lift. Yes we had a lift up to our apartment, but not before climbing 30 steps, 5 without a handrail.
The roof terrace had stairs too steep to climb even if I could. When my husband went up to have a look, he said it was so rickety he didn’t feel safe.
It states that it has a fully equipped kitchen. However, there is No kettle, No toaster, No microwave, and No tea-towels. The freezer door was under the kitchen sink. The doors to get into the fridge and cupboards had to be prized open with a fork. This is not what I call a fully equipped kitchen where we come from.
The smell of damp as soon as you enter the apartment was awful; it was so bad we had to hang our clothes out in the sun lounge.
When we complained to the agent that rain was pouring in the lounge and dripping in the bedroom we were told it was raining and it had to be expected.
There were no instruction manuals on how to use anything, everything was trial and error. When trying the light switches, we inadvertently switched the hot water off and had to call out an engineer.
There is a TV, but only in Italian.
The Sofa had a throw, because it was filthy.
The shower was too low to be used. And now shower curtain.
On the last day we were asked to be at the apartment at 6pm to get our deposit back, our rep eventually arrived after lots of phone calls at 10:30pm which meant we had to stay in all night on our last day in Rome.
I could go on and on. Just don’t go there unless you get it for half price. €400 for a week in July perhaps?
