Overview
Il Piccolo Nido is in the village of Sant'Eustachio (Montignoso Municipality, Massa-Carrara Province, Northern Tuscany), on the slopes of the Apuan Alps, approx. 300 m above sea level. The house is in the southern most part of S. Eustachio and it is the last house of the village. It has nothing in front of it but the view of the sea and the coastline, the hills below and sunshine.
When in S. Eustachio, park your car on the side of the road and take via Grotta. After 100m you will get to the house that being far from the main road is quiet and silent. The house has a total of four rooms, three on the ground floor and one, the sleeping room, on the first floor. It is about 55 m2 in size. The entrance is in the living room, a sunny room with the fireplace and the sleeping sofa. Available to guests are the sat TV/radio, the dvd reader, the stereo, a collection of books (mainly Italian books) and of cds. From the living room you can get to the kitchen or if you take the stairs you go up to the sleeping room. The kitchen has a "cucina in muratura" (litterally a brickwork kitchen) which was common in the past. In the brick structure, covered with tiles, find their place the cooking fires, the electric oven and the ceramic sink. The kitchen is well organized and equipped. The sleeping room is upstairs with a king bed (180x200 cm) and an open wardrobe. The roof with the chestnut beams and boards is on view. From the kitchen you get in a small corridor where the toilets overlooks and which takes you to the garden door. In the garden available to our guests are the washing machine, a table with chairs and an umbrella but most of all the view on the coast and the valley.
The house is one of the oldest of Sant'Eustachio and it is listed in the Catasto Borbonico (land registry) of early 1800s. Before 1950s the house was a three floor house, one room per floor (this structure is locally called "terratetto", litterally "roof-ground"). Terratetto was the typical house structure of the area. It was made with the local stone called Cardoso. In the 1960s, the third floor was destroyed and the new part of the house (where the kitchen and the toilet are now) was built. Hiking trails start just in front of the house, and there is natural spring at a short distance (10 mins walk) with very good purifying water.

Location & area
Montignoso is between Versilia and Massa stretching from the top of Monte Carchio to the sand of the coast, crossed by the Pannosa River. You can find a variety of different landscapes from the beaches of Versilia, to the marshes of Porta Lake and finally the mountain landscapes of the Apuan Alps. Montignoso is included in the protected area of Apuan Alps Regional Park. About the origin of its name, it could be linked to the tradition of lighting fires on the mountains in order to make signs to sailor men. From this tradition, the Latin name of Mons Igneus, a mountain of fire. The clear sea waters, the well organized beach resorts, the proximity to Versilia, Garfagnana, Lunigiana and Tuscan cities of art, the touristic airport and the sea port and the Spa of Villa Undulna attract every year numerous tourists from Italy and abroad who decide to spend their holiday in Montignoso.
Montignoso is dominated by its Castle, the fortress of Aghinolfi. Among the castles of Massa Carrara, it is one of the most ancient and it was an element of the byzantine Limes, on the border with the Lombard territories. The castle, named by the Lombard king Aghinolfo, played a very important rule in the history of the town. The fortress was an important control centre, in particular on the main roads (Via Regia, via Aemili o Scauri, via Francigena). The castle probably has roman origins. Before the arrival of the Romans the area was inhabited by the Liguri - Apuani who where defeated by the Romans who understand the strategic position of this land for their commercial traffics. It has been contended for centuries by the military forces of Pisa, Genoa and Lucca. It played a strategic role in the Second World War as 1945 it was a nazist stronghold on the Gotic Line; the castle was set free by Americans and the partigiani. All the territory of Massa Carrara is a perfect destination for food&wine tourism.
