Overview
This ancient grotto, built into the hillside, has been renovated to provide comfortable accomodation with an open plan living area and mezzanine bedroom.
The exposed stone rear wall of the property provides a romantic setting for traditional meals cooked in the modern, fully equippped galley style kitchen which retains the original Calitrian kitchen as a work area.Known to locals as the Positana of Irpinia, the Antico Borgo of Calitri provides an opportunity to relax in a village seemingly untouched by time, where our neighbours still farm their land and preserve the produce for the winter months. Religious festivals are celebrated by the whole village and at Christmas living Nativity Scenes are enacted in some of the old grottos.Calitri also has a modern town and there are several bars and restaurants serving wonderful local food and wine at very reasonable prices, together with shops and a swimming pool.Calitri is ideally situated in the heart of Campania. Surrounded by beautiful countryside it is within easy reach of either coast- offering the unspoilt beauty of the Gargano Peninsular, the breathtaking ruins of Pompeii or Paestum, the heartstopping drive along the Amalfi Coast or the sights of Naples and Rome. There is even skiing at Laceno which is around 45 minutes drive.
