Location & area

Our attractive holiday home has been created by the lovingly and painstaking renovation of a large XVII century estate , near the ancient Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Valle, the origins of which date back to the late Middle Ages. The farmhouse, divided into one cottage and four apartments, is set on a panoramic position on the gentle slopes that descend towards the Arno river.



A large garden equipped with tables, chairs, canopies, with (7 x 12 metres) swimming pool with a part for children (3x3 metres) surrounds the compound. All the apartments have been tastefully finished, fully furnished and they have been endowed with TV sat, and their own heating system. Laundry room available for common use. BBQ.



The quiet, hilly, panoramic area is only three kilometres from the beautiful medieval hamlet of Laterina. The lodgings enjoy countryside privacy, close proximity to the attractions and amenities of Arezzo; they are also the ideal base for many excursions to all Central Italy. Firenze, Siena, Cortona, lake Trasimeno and Perugia are not so far away; since there are good motorways and rail links with the rest of Tuscany .The shopping lover will find nearby many outlets of the most famous Italian fashion brands : such as Prada, Gucci, Fendi, D&G'

Upper Valdarno

The first part of the valley where the Arno river flows it's called Upper Valdarno., a long Valley closed at East by the Mountains of Pratomagno and bordered at west by the Chianti hills.

Upper Aretine Valdarno has been inhabited since prehistoric time, experienced an important development during the Middles ages when a series of Castles and Fortresses were built , from which the villages located along the Valley grew up .The majority of the municipalities in the area have medieval origins and their ancient splendor can still be seen .
This area is also characterized by a natural phenomenon: Le Balze, small , craggy hills formed during the centuries by the erosion of the land along the slopes of Pratomagno. Le balze create a really suggestive scenery, at it is common knowledge that Leonardo da Vinci, made this landscape immortal in his paintings.
Laterina - The territory where today the Laterina castle stands out was inhabited ever since very ancient times, as the Etrurian dwellings and the probable Roman settlements of the Augustan age testify. In 1272,Arezzo took possession of Laterina to hold up the expansion in Valdarno of the Florentines. Since then for over one century, the castle witnessed bloodshed between the Republic of Florence and the Town of Arezzo.

After a series of ups and downs,, ,on the 5th November 1384, in Laterina was signed the treaty that sanctioned the final defeat of Arezzo and the delivery of the territories of the old village to the Republic of Florence.

The historical centre is in perfect conditions and lies on a hill that dominates the Arno plain. The circle of walls encloses the village that overlooks the rugged declivity of the hill. The ancient centre is made up of three parallel streets: the central one, the "Via di Mezzo" ends to the east with the Fortress and to the west with the tower Torre Guinigi. in the middle of the village there is the square with the church of S. Ippolito and S.Cassiano which took this name from the old monastery that is still on a small hill in front of Laterina and that is now on the process of being restored.. Out of Laterina, along the Via Vecchia Aretina, Villa Monsoglio is one of the most magnificent villas around Arezzo. It has an extensive Italian garden and interiors decorated with frescoes. Near Laterina there was the bridge Ponte Romito, so called because in the near hospital (founded in 1109 and now known as Villa Monsoglio) had settled one or more "repentants", usually Franciscan tertiaries, commonly called by the population "hermits". The bridge, whose ancient structures remain, was important for the communications between Arezzo and Valdarno..
