Overview
This beautiful villa, in the little mountain village of Loutra, 12 km from Rethymnon, has been built with great style. There is a 25sqm swimming pool, and the villa is suitable for up to 12 people, with 6 bedrooms. There are 7 shower rooms with WC, most of which are en-suite and a few of these also have a bath. Air conditioning (9 units)and heating system is available included in the rate.
There is a paved loggia at the entrance to the main living area, furnished with a large wooden dining table. The house is designed on a series of levels and is composed of an elegant main living area, plus a further uniquely styled variety of self contained en-suite bedrooms and apartments leading off the courtyard and off upper verandas.
The main living area is split level, and has a stone fireplace, a baby grand piano, and comfortable sofas. On a raised level to one side is a modern fully equipped kitchenette and a small elegant dining area. A pretty tiny patio leads off the kitchen, and there is a full bathroom/WC leading off from the dining area. From the first floor terrace there is a narrow wrought iron staircase leading up to a really beautiful split level roof terrace with latticed wood surround, ideal for relaxing in the sun. The roof terraces offer attractive views all around, across to the sea in the distance, over rooftops and old village houses. Due to the village and the nature of the old buildings around, not all of the terraces of Villa Athena are entirely private. The house is also not suitable for those with mobility difficulties but the terraces of the villa have been designed with the safety of children in mind.
The nearest beach can be found at a distance of 3 km. There are some village mini-markets and tavernas, within walking distance, and there is a bus service to Rethymnon, but we consider car hire to be essential.

Location & area
The residence is situated in the center of the traditional village of Loutra in the municipality of Arkadi/Rethymnon. During the Venetian rule over Crete this village was owned by the aristocrat Mattheos Kallergis. Much of this atmosphere has been preserved, like picturesque narrow streets, arcades, a fountain with an Arab inscription and more. The village is situated in 12 km distance to Rethymnon and about 3 km to the sea and is surrounded by olive groves.
The nearest beach can be found at a distance of 3 km. There are some village mini-markets and tavernas, within walking distance, and there is a bus service to Rethymnon, but we consider car hire to be essential.
Aboe picturesque town of Rethymno, is the capital town of the province of the same name. This province extends from the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) to the Idi Mountains through to the borders of the provinces of Chania and Heraklion. Rethymno is positioned on the north coast of Crete, 80 km west from Heraklion, and 75 km east of Chania, where the two airports of Crete are to be found, about an hours drive away by car. Rethymno harbour has a direct ferry connection with the mainland of Greece. The mediaeval old town of Rethymno, with its narrow streets, Venetian palaces and Turkish minarets has a distinct atmosphere. The oriental flavour of the town brings to life the ever changing history since ancient times. Along with the numerous seemingly unlimited sights to see and the beautiful old town, with the Venetian Fortezza or fortress, the scenic harbour, and the many enticing tavernas, cafes and restaurants with wonderful Cretan delicacies, Rethymno has one of the most magnificent fine sandy beaches, which stretches to the east almost as far as the eye can see. The beach, which is the longest in Crete, continues for several kilometres, here and there en route broken into small shingle coves where here and there one can find the scattered tiny hamlets reminiscent of the mountain villages. Altogether between Rethymno to the town of Prinos there are no less than 8 beaches, which have been awarded the European Blue Flag. There is much to delight in exploring the many different archaeological sites, monasteries, churches, Venetian and Turkish monuments and memorials, and of course there are archaeological, historical and folk museums, as well as other art museums waiting to be visited. Exploring one of the many Cretan gorges in this area, is sure to reward you with the sight of numerous caves and little grottos. Those of you who delight in traditional customs, will enjoy the numerous cultural festivals and traditional days of celebration in Rethymno, where you get the opportunity to experience a slice of Cretan life.
Religious days, the seasonal times of the year and many other reasons mostly form the basis for the regional and public festivities. So in the middle of July you will find for example the Cretan wine festival with its 500 year old tradition, which lasts three weeks and is attended by thousands of people. Of further interest, in the many outlying villages not far from Rethymno, traditional handicrafts are still very much alive. For example, the lovely pottery in Margarites, or the basket weaving of Mixorrouma, the traditional stone masonry in Alfa, or the village of Anogia where lengths of material are still woven on traditional weaving looms, and where traditional Cretan folk art is still being produced. There are also interesting wood carving workshops in Argyroupoli, Agios Konstantinos and Margarites.ut the twon and the surrounding

Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud
It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:
- It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
- If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
- Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.
