Location & area
Megalochori means 'Big Village' - a mere euphemism - and is known to have been populated since the middle of the 17th century. Less than 60 years ago, the village was host to some of the most powerful families in the island, producing the nectar sweet 'Visanto' and exporting it across the world.
Peace, tranquillity and echoes of by-gone days best describe one of the few traditional settlements on the island. Situated 9.5 kilometers from Fira, Megalochori is within easy reach of Akrotiri and many beaches on the island.
Today Megalochori has a lively community with a fairly large number of permanent residents, adding to the local flavour and charm.
Megalochori presents a multitude of faces, with narrow roads begging to be explored. Three of the island's largest wineries are located here, with excellent tavernas located in the village.
