Location & area
EVIA is the second largest Greek island, yet is one of the least known & least developed commercially, with a slower pace of life (it is still common to meet village shepherds on donkeys, for example). The population of permanent inhabitants & visitors is small, but the island is accessible all year round thanks to a road bridge from the mainland, as well as several ferry crossing points. The locals are friendly & the crime rate is extremely low. It is a hidden paradise with an amazing range of things to see & do all through the year. Geographically, the island is a microcosm of Greece as a whole the north and middle parts have lush alpine areas while the extreme south is dry & rocky interspersed with lush gorges, spectacular coast roads, ancient marble quarries & unique geological & archaeological sites.
THE ISLAND offers the following features: spectacular scenery (regarding views, one guide book to Greece claims Evia has the best mountain roads in the whole country!); outstanding walking, hiking & mountain biking; abundant wildlife, birds & wildflowers; 100s of rocky coves & quiet beaches; mountains up to 1750m; harbours famous in classical times; delicious, inexpensive taverna food & wine, often including fish caught that day; relaxing cafes; sophisticated café-bars & shops in the capital town; delightful natural spas at Edipsos in the north; fascinating craft shops at Eritrea harbour; horse riding, diving, water skiing & rafting. From Evia, its easy to visit the mainland eg Athens, Delphi & the ski resort on Mount Parnassos. The fascinating smaller island of Skyros lies off the east coast of Evia; ferries go from Kymi. According to legend, Achilles was raised on Skyros; there is a unique breed of Skyrian horses, and the poet Rupert Brooke is buried there (in his corner of a foreign field that is for ever England).
THE HOUSE lies in a beautiful green valley besides Zarakes village (15 minutes walk). Known locally as Zarka, THE VILLAGE is situated near the middle of Evia at the islands narrowest part, and has wonderful views of the Aegean on the east coast and the Gulf of Evia on the west, with the Greek mainland in the distance. Zarka has 2 tavernas, a pizzeria, 2 bars, a general store & several smaller shops, a bakers shop, 2 butchers, a workshop making cheese and yoghurt & a petrol station. Fishmongers' vans call each day, and there is a free doctors clinic twice a week. THE VILLAGE BEACH (on the Aegean) is 4km away & is never busy; it has 2 fish tavernas, and a beach bar in summer.
THE VILLAGE has a twice daily bus connection to Athens, and there are ferry crossings from nearby Nea Styra and Eretria to the mainland. But to explore more fully a car is essential (4WD if possible, although not crucial); visitors from abroad tend to hire one from the airport or Athens.
SMALL TOWNS are 15kms to both north and south with a larger range of shops and tavernas, including banks, cash points, pharmacies, etc. A short drive away are outstanding beaches, cliff walks, archaeological sites, alpine areas, the capital town, etc. Visits to the Evian gorges or to the mainland can easily be done in a day, while trips to the far north of the island or to Skyros require an overnight stay.
