Location & area

In the Breton language, Le Gorvello means the Forge.

The Templars founded the village around 1150. They had established a headquarters at Carentoir and owned about 3000 hectares of land in the surrounding region. In order to correctly operate and manage these holdings they set up twelve strategically placed strongholds of which Le Gorvello was one. Judging by the fact that their first construction was a chapel, the surrounding countryside must have already been rather populated.

During the 16th century, the Hospitaliers de St. John of Jerusalem, successors to the Templars, incorporated the original chapel into the construction of the village church that stands today where the chapel once was.
Le Gorvello always was, and still is today, an agricultural village. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was also a center of cottage industry weaving in linen and hemp.

Administratively, Le Gorvello is located in two communes, Theix and Sulniac, the boundary being the stream that runs through the village.
