Location & area

Champ Giraud is two and a half kilometers outside the lovely village of VERTEUI-SUR-CHARENTE, with it's beautiful castle. The department of Charente is the second sunniest region in France.'

In the village are all amenities including two bakers, post office, a butcher, charcuterie, grocer, tabac, hairdresser and bar/restaurant and of course the stunning castle, which it is planned to open the gardens to the public in 2006.'

Verteuil is five kilometers south of the market town of RUFFEC where there are large supermarkets and a good selection of general shops and a choice of bars and brasseries.

LAKES in Charente are popular for swimming. Sandy beaches with gradual slopes into the warm waters make these an excellent place for children. Some have sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and pedalos.'

We are ideally situated to visit the towns of POITIERS, LIMOGES, ANGOULEME and COGNAC. The coastal town of LA ROCHELLE and the sandy, west coast beaches are only one and a half hours drive away.'

ANGOULEME is an art rich town, with its ramparts butting over the river Charente. There are many 17th and 18th century streets to wander around, with magnificent houses. The town hosts an international comic strip festival. Angouleme is just a 25 minute drive down the RN10 from the cottage.

NAUTILUS, a large swimming complex with waves and slides and skating rink near a very large lake on the outskirts of Angouleme

CONFOLENS is the capital of the Charente-Limousin. It is an ancient town with prehistoric standing stones a short distance outside the town. Enjoy restaurants, cafes and the twice weekly market. Originally a garrison for the Roman army, the town is now a thriving, typical French market town that is particularly famous for its international folklore festival of song and dance known as "Danses et Musiques du Monde", which is held in August every year.'

ORADOUR-SUR-GLANE is a village that was brutally destroyed by the Nazis in WWII and now preserved as a memorial. It stands today exactly as it was left on 10th June 1944. A very moving and worthwhile experience to visit it. '

In Cognac visit the famed cognac museum and houses of Hennessy, Martell, R'my Martin. Go to Jarnac to visit Courvoisier. Both towns are on the River Charente, ideal for boat trips and fishing.

LIMOGES is the capital of the French Porcelain Industry. There is also an aquarium and zoo. Walk back in time down the Rue de la Boucherie past the half-timbered houses.

LA ROCHELLE with its beaches, old port and aquarium is within easy reach. It's a lively port with lots to see from the old port with the 3 towers, caf's and clubs, the museum of the New World, the aquarium with shark tank and many streets and markets to shop. There are boats out to R', Aix and Ol'ron, and Fort Boyard (used as the setting for the game show of the same name).'

The theme park of the moving image. Experience 3D cyber trips and space missions, view films on giant flat, circular and spherical screens, Imax cinema, the Atlantis and virtual experiences. You will need a full day to enjoy all the attractions, music, shows and breathtaking adventures on land, sea and in space. The evening water fountains and light display is not to be missed. '

LA VALLE DE SINGES (Valley of Monkeys)
This is a very popular and fascinating attraction. It provides a unique chance to see monkeys and gorillas close up, living in a natural habitat in semi freedom. La Vall'e des Singes has been designed for conservation of species. Over 200 animals roam free on wooded isles.

Silver Mines of the Frankish Kings, MELLE
These Vth to Xth century Silver Mines are the oldest in France that are still open to the public. In the grounds are the Carolingien gardens with plants which were cultivated at the time the men worked the mine. The various plants which you will be able to see were useful for daily nutrition and also for medicine.

Situated between Niort and La Rochelle, is the famous Green Venice (Venise Verte). Take a guided or self-drive canoe, kayak or flat-bottom boat trip along the areas' canals. This area has more than 400 kms of small roads, as well as foot, horse and bicycle paths. A small tourist train also circles the heart of the area.
