Location & area
Fitou is an unspoilt village offering ample opportunity to sample it's famous wine in it's many village caves.
There are great restaurants, serving superb food and offering a unique French atmosphere. Close-by is a medieval chateau that has a museum, gift shop and bar where tapas are served.
The village also offers a supermarket, bakery, Post Office, newsagent and a doctors surgery.
There is a football stadium, a hard surface football/basketball court with a small climbing wall, a children's playground, a bouladrome and a tennis court.
During the summer months the village comes alive with regular music evenings outside the village bar plus the unforgettable annual wine fete at the beginning of August.
The village has numerous events throughout the year from concerts, wine festivals, antique fairs, to sardine barbecues and petanque competitions.
For the winter months, the ski slopes of the Pyrénéean mountains are all in close proximity.
Within a 5-10 minute drive and easily accessible, is the beautiful Mediterranean sea, offering long sandy beaches, and picturesque fishing villages.
The beaches offer something for all, whether it be activities such as wind-surfing, sailing and kite boading, to relaxation in the form of regular or secluded naturist bathing.
The local area offers a host of family activities and days out, such as the underground caves at Ville-Franche (40mins), Le Petit Train Jaune (the little yellow train) that travels up the Pyrenees mountains (40 mins), a fantastic 'Drive-Thru' African safari park at Sigean with over 3000 animals (15 mins) and the adventure and water parks of Port Leucate(12 mins)
For those seeking a quieter, more historical outing 60 minutes to the east up the Aude valley is Carcassonne one of the wonders of Medieval architecture with its splendid cité and castle, with panoramic views.
More magnificent castles are to be found near in the Corbieres, particularly at Queribus and Peyrepertuse, two stunning feats of engineering, these castles seemingly defy gravity and reason, on top of mountain peaks.
Visitors can also discover Andorra and Spain, with the Spanish border being a mear 40 minutes drive away.
