Overview

Tiled floors, stone walls, exposed beams … Les Canardeaux combines rustic simplicity with modern conveniences, a perfect vacation home for country walks, horse riding, fishing, wine tasting and visiting chateaux. The 8m x 4 m pool has a security cover and alarm, more than ensuring compliance with new French safety laws. On the terrace, a long table overlooks the pool, and the barbeque is nearby. The cottage is well equipped and comfortable in any season with beautiful oak and pine furniture throughout. In the living area, there are squashy leather chairs and a sofa for lounging by the log fire or satellite TV. Over-sized duvets and hot water bottles are provided in the bedrooms.
Ambrault is in the Berry, the southern part of the Loire Valley, ideally situated for exploring the whole region. To the north are the grand chateaux of the Loire River such as Chambord and Valencay, the historic town of Bourges, the fine wines of Sancerre. To the west you will find the Brenne Natural Regional Park with its lakes for fishing and picnics, and the Haute-Touche Nature Reserve where wild animals roam freely. To the east, the picturesque town of La Châtre; to the south the vast lake of Eguzon for water sports. A notable weekly market takes place at St Août (10 minutes' drive) and you should visit the excellent restaurants such as the St Germain at Sassierges and the Restaurant de la Gare at Ardentes. Interesting walks and a tranquil riverside for fishing are on the doorstep.
The two 18-hole golf courses are about half an hour's drive away to the west and east, and there is a 9-hole course just up the road.
Stocking up with supplies is not a problem as there are two supermarkets that open on Sunday mornings. There is also a large Auchan hypermarket on the outskirts of Chateauroux for shopping trips from Monday to Saturday.
The house: I enjoyed furnishing Les Canardeaux, over-spending my budget in local shops and markets. Books, games, DVDs and music CDs are available. The wines of our region are not to be missed and a small selection is stored in the old bread oven that serves as a wine cellar. I am a keen cook and you will find balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and Dijon mustard as standard, as well as an extensive range of herbs and spices. There are plenty of pots and pans in good working order (no loose handles) and generous-sized dishes holding enough for everyone.
Outside: The garden stretches out beyond the pool with nothing to block the stunning sunrises and sunsets we experience. You are welcome to pick the grapes, plums, cherries and apples. The entrance is secured with a lockable iron gate and there is room for up to 3 cars to park.
Lifestyle: If you want to experience life in the heart of France, stay at Les Canardeaux for a couple of weeks. There are few tourists other than some discerning French who try to keep the Berry a secret. Meet our friendly French neighbours, if you wish, and unwind in the peaceful countryside. The pool is there for your use in summer and the log fire in winter. You can enjoy a quiet day in the sun or explore the many interesting walks, chateaux, golf courses and much more - all within driving distance of the house.

Location & area

Les Canardeaux is located in a rural hamlet close to the village of Ambrault and within easy reach of the mediaval city of Issoudun and the major town of Chateauroux. It lies between rolling farmland and extensive woodland in a hitherto little-known region called The Berry. The Foret de Bommiers is on the doorstep and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. George Sand, the French writer and companion of Chopin, adored this countryside and her house at Nohant is open to visitors. The nearest golf course is about 10 minutes' drive away at Sainte Fauste and there are two more courses within easy driving distance. The vineyards of Chateaumeillant, Reuilly/Quincy and Valencay are within easy reach. Nearby are the chateaux of Ars, Lys St George and Sarzay - enchanting fairy tale castles nestling in the forests. Simple, inexpensive meals are available in Bommiers, Maron, Vouillon and Ambrault, and there is an exceptionally good restaurant at Sassierges St Germain. All villages are just a few minutes' drive from the house. There is a renowned market every Tuesday morning at St Aout, 9 kilometres away, where you can also purchase fishing permits in the local café and go horse riding. A baker's van calls three times a week, and there is a baker and grocer three minutes' drive away in the village of Ambrault. Banks can be found in St Aout and Ardentes where there is also a supermarket, and close by on the outskirts of Chateauroux is a huge Auchan hypermarket.

There are French windows in the double room overlooking the terrace with its wonderful sunrises and sunsets. Upstairs there is a spacious double room, with space for a cot if required, and another single bedroom. All the bedrooms have electric heaters and are provided with protective mattress covers, pillows, duvets, blankets and top quality bed linen. The cot and high chair are provided on request. All towels are supplied – bath, hand and separate ones for the pool. We also leave you tea towels, washing up liquid, washing powder, dishwasher tablets, hot water bottles, sewing kit, first aid kit and shoe polish. The desk on the landing contains lots of brochures about things to do to complement your stay in this lovely region. The garden is mainly laid to grass so children can run about to their heart's content.
