Location & area

Villa Wastra is located in the banjar (or village association/local government unique to Bali) of Penyabangan, village of Kerta, Payangan district, Gianyar Regency. The estate is perched on a lip of a valley looking down upon a tributary of the Ayung river in the center of the island. The tropical rain forest vegetation of this part of Bali is still dense with various kinds of mountain ferns, and bamboo. The main economic resources of the village are agriculture and bamboo handicraft.



Penyabangan is located at 700 meters above sea-level on the slope of Mount Batur. It has a temperature of
24 degrees Celcius during the day and 19 degrees during the night. Rainfall during the rainy season in December until February, is quite high. The dry season
is from June to October.



Thirteen kilometres north of Penyabangan is the mountain village of Kintamani, on the rim of mount Batur crater, offering a spectacular view of lake Batur. In Trunyan, on the shore of lake Batur one can see the ancient ways of the Bali Aga tradition. The Bali Aga claim to be the oldest inhabitants of Bali, aboriginals who have lived here before the Javanese kingdom of Majapahit’s invasion in 1343. Other activities in the
area are white-water rafting in the Ayungriver, elephant safari in the jungle, Bali Zoo, birdpark and many possibilities for hiking or cycling on the slopes of the mountain or just walking through traditional old villages hidden among ricefields or following narrow footpaths between green embankments.
