Overview

Sujiya-cho is a fully remodeled Kyoto townhouse that has beautifully arranged rooms decorated with traditional Japanese hanging scrolls, nabeshima rugs, and antique tables and folding screens. Featuring rooms with tatami floors that blend easily with other wooden-floored rooms, this house elegantly blends traditional Japanese style with modern convenience. Tucked behind the house is a quiet, elegant garden that can be lit up at night. This house can accommodate up to ten guests.

Enter through the front entrance into a wide entryway with a table and chairs, perfect for receiving guests. Step up into the first floor tatami room, which faces out into the garden. At night, high-quality futon bedding can be laid out for two guests in this room. To the right of this room guests will find a modern, wood-floored kitchen designed to fit seamlessly with the traditional design of the house. In the kitchen, guests will find an electric stove, refrigerator, toaster oven, large sink, microwave, hot water pot, and wooden counter. Towards the back, a stone bath inspired by those in traditional Japanese inns entices guests to relax in a hot soak. The bath also has a shower. Also on this floor, guests will find a modern, western-style toilet.

Ascend the stairs from the front entry onto a large wood-floored landing on the second floor. To the left, guests will find a wide tatami room, traditionally arranged, where at night up to four guests can be accommodated with high-quality futon bedding that is stored in the wide closets during the daytime. To the right, a room with large couches is separated from the landing by a low bamboo screen. Next to this small living room is a bedroom with wooden floors and two beds. Also on this floor are a small sitting room, a bath with a shower, another western-style toilet, and a large walk-in closet and office space.

From the second floor sitting room, a steep set of stairs goes up to the third floor, which has two more beds.

Sujiya-cho is centrally located south of Shijo Avenue, between the Kamo River and Karasuma Avenue on Tominokoji Street.

Sujiya-cho has been remodeled and is maintained by Iori Co., many of whose staff speak English fluently. Iori staff will help you check in and out and will clean the house for you during your absences. Iori also offers concierge services. Feel free to ask us about recommendations and arrangements for sightseeing, dining, shopping, and entertainment.

Sujiya-cho is next to the Iori main office, where you can check-in and out and near two other Iori owned machiya houses.

Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud

It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:

  • It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
  • If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
  • Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.
