Location & area

Marrakech, one of the great cities of North Africa, is the gateway to the desert and the Atlas Mountain a ‘Pink City’ set against a backdrop of snow capped mountains of the Atlas in an oasis of date palms.

The magical city of Marrakech is a city of labyrinthine alleyways, secluded palaces, museums, mosques and markets. Its soukhs are famous for their dazzling variety of spices that assault the senses, Berber rugs and for fine quality leatherwork.

Founded in the 11th Century by Almoravids, nomadic Berbers from the Western Sahara, the city became one of the Islamic world’s most important artistic and cultural centres and the capital of their empire. Today it is still an important cultural centre with a wealth of architectural splendours and historical artifacts. During the French colonisation of Morocco a Ville Nouvelle or new town was added with its wide orange tree and palm lined avenues. Split into two areas, Gueliz and Hivernage the new city is quickly becoming as vibrant as the old; albeit with less character.
