Dramatic rolling landscapes of sugar cane rise to meet the awe-inspiring mountains in the Black River Gorge, declared a national park in 1997 as Le Morne on the coast, visible from many miles is a poignant reminder of the precarious sanctuary of runaway slaves. FLIC EN FLAC Flic En Flac is a great seaside destination with nothing better than a stroll along the stunning tropical beach, one of the very best on the island, whilst enjoying a fruit cocktail - watch out for the red hot chillie sauce (optional extra,) or curry bread from one of the vans, or mopeds selling food and drinks; or beach barbecue, or just marvelling at the exotic sega dancers with local musicians. The sunsets are absolutely stunning and the unbroken coral reef acts as a natural barrier for the calm waters of the blue lagoon. Watch the local fishermen fishwalking along the reef in the morning and selling their fresh prawns and shrimps later on the beach.
