We booked with Margpher House because we were intrigued by the their web page. Our hosts were, for the most part, polite and hospitable but there were too many issues which seriously detracted from our experience. On our first morning we sat down to a breakfast that was stone cold...the eggs and toast had been prepared much earlier in the morning. While our room was clean it was cramped, plain and there was nothing African about the decor. It bore little resemblance to the descriptions and pictures on the internet. Our bathroom was randomly decorated with 8 different colours of tiles which perhaps gave us some understanding of why we would not get a hot shower after the first night. Cold breakfasts and cold showers do not make for a cheery start to the day. On days 2 and 3 the breakfasts were much better, they were hot. On our last night we thought it best to settle our bill rather than wait to do it in the morning. This proved to be a challenge. We were told by our hosts that we needed the exact amount in large bills (American $). They did not keep any money to make change, they did not want Kenyan currency, and they did not want small American bills. We were told American $1 bills were worthless and only used as tips for taxi drivers. Fortunately we were able, after some negotiation, to reach an agreement that required us, the guests, to go to a Forex Exchange in the Nairobi airport to get the correct bills to give to the taxi driver who would then take it to our hosts. They took no responsibility for solving the dilemma. And breakfast on the last morning...there wasn't one. We expected something near what was advertised on the internet, we didn't get it. After our arrival in Nairobi it took us over 2 hours in traffic to get to the Margpher House, not 20 minutes. A cold breakfast, no breakfast, cold showers and hassles over payment...a very unpleasant way to end our stay in Kenya.
